Dr. Eirik Krogstad conducts and leads elemental and isotopic analytical efforts at PNNL. This includes analyses on a high resolution ICP-MS (Thermofisher Element-2XR), a multicollector ICP-MS (Thermofisher Neptune Plus), and two laser ablation systems (Photon Machines Analyst 193 nm ArF excimer laser and Applied Spectra J110 Tandem LIBS-LA-ICP-MS). With university appointments between 1988 and 2011, Dr. Krogstad has held positions at Laboratory Manager, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Senior Research Scientist. Dr. Krogstad has designed and supervised trace element and analytical laboratories since 1988. These laboratories include the Isotope Geology Laboratory at the Department of Earth and Space Sciences (now Geosciences) at Stony Brook University (New York), the Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory at the University of Maryland (College Park), the multicollector ICP-MS, LA-ICP-MS, and TIMS laboratories at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (Copenhagen), and the Laser Ablation ICP-MS laboratory at Georgia State University (Atlanta). He is now at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and is a lead scientist the Environmental Sciences Laboratory (ICP-OES, ICP-MS, XRF) and leads all use of the high resolution and multicollector ICP-MS instruments at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory at PNNL. In addition, he is supervising construction of a new clean lab for low blank (low metal contamination) sample handling and processing at PNNL. He and his graduate students (seven M.S. and four Ph.D.) have developed new methods of trace element and isotopic analysis for multiple elements and samples types.
